Simplot Mines, Employees Recognized with Prestigious Safety Awards

December 08, 2022

BOISE, Idaho — At the recent 2022 Mine Safety & Health Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, all three of Simplot’s mines were honored with prestigious safety awards. The sites in Overton, Nevada; Vernal, Utah; and Afton, Wyoming are key to Simplot’s Purpose to Contribute to Feeding Our World.

Overton Mine Manager Rex Simpson and Vernal Mine Manager Jared Jackson were both awarded the Mine Manager of the Year award by the Mine Safety and Health Administration Western District. Simpson was honored with the 2022 award, while Jackson received the 2021 award, which was delayed due to Covid and presented this year. Smoky Canyon (WY) Maintenance Supervisor Clint Lloyd also was recognized with the Lifesaver of the Year Award.

The Mine Manager of the Year award recognizes plant/mine managers who have displayed outstanding safety practices in their operations. The Lifesaver Award is awarded to a person or group of people who performed a life-saving action of a person or people in distress, or whose actions were of honorable merit.

Simplot Senior Director Health and Safety Alicia Duke acknowledged the employee-honorees who make safety a value at their sites. “We are so proud of and excited for these three deserving employees to receive recognition for all of their safety efforts and accomplishments,” she said. “These are incredibly well-deserved awards for this talented group, and we commend them for their commitment to safety, at their sites and as a Company value.”

Simplot’s Mining and Manufacturing operations began in the mid-1940s, when wartime requirements boosted demand for Idaho potatoes and America’s phosphate fertilizer supplies were dwindling. Seeing great business opportunity in meeting those demands, J.R. Simplot was determined to explore untapped phosphate reserves and develop processing and production capabilities.

Today, Simplot is one of North America’s major suppliers of crop nutrition. Our Mining and Manufacturing operations are key to this success, building a complementary distribution system to capitalize on our unique phosphate position.

Simplot’s Overton site mines and produces silica sand, and the Vernal and Smoky Canyon sites mine phosphate ore.
